Coaches Report - Melbourne Ice House February 12th and 13th 2011

21-Feb-2011
The Goannas competed in Round 6 of the AWIHL in Melbourne at the Ice House, February 12th & 13th, 2011.

In the 1st period of Game #1, Saturday evening, the Goannas battled hard on the ice producing some close offensive chances but unfortunately were unable to finish. Team defence was effective and goaltender Hayley White made some outstanding saves as well, to keep the Ice off the scoreboard until 22 seconds left in the first period.

The Goannas competitiveness carried on in the second period, with continued strong performances from the defence and more brilliant saves from Hayley between the pipes. However, the Ice opened the scoring with 3.33 left and capitalized on a Goannas error at 0.24 ending the period with a 2-0 lead.

The 3rd period saw more bump and grind action but the Goannas remained off the scoreboard.  The Ice capitalized on some poor Goannas line changes and loose defensive zone play scoring 3 goals in just under 3 minutes, at 10.13, 9.11 and 8.39 respectively. A timeout chat saw the Goannas return to more solid play in both ends but remained scoreless, capping the Ice’s victory to 6-0.

Game #2, Sunday morning started the same with the starting line lacking focus out of the gate allowing a goal @ 16.45.  The play was busy in both ends with each goalie facing about 10 shots and the Ice finding the back of the net at 12.55 pushing their lead to 2-0. The Ice took 8 minutes of penalties throughout the period and finally the Goannas Power Play was able to capitalize at 5.06 with #11, Teresa Moriarty’s outstanding tip from #27 Tamra Jones’ shot from the blue line making the score 2-1.

The Goannas started the 2nd period off strong with #11 Teresa Moriarty scoring her second goal from #10 Tess Reilly’s pass, 11 seconds in, at 16.49.  This tied the game at 2-2. The Ice responded with a goal of their own at 16.07 and another at 14.00 pushing their lead to 4-2. The Goannas tightened the score to 4-3 with a goal off the faceoff from #27 Tamra Jones’, assisted by #36 Shaela Doig at 12.53. The Goannas unfortunately took back to back penalties at 10.49 and 9.58 in which the Ice capitalized on 2 Power Play goals at 9.32 and 8.59 respectively. The Ice pushed their lead to 7-3 with 17 seconds left in the period.

The battle continued to be strong in 3rd period action with the Goannas having a few strong offensive chances and limiting the Ice’s opportunities to get on the scoreboard.  The Goannas played with true Goanna spirit, battling in both ends of the ice. Their efforts were rewarded at 10.36 with #27 Tamra Jones finding the back of the net for her second of the game making the score 7-4 which is how the game would end.

Special mention to ‘Players of the Game’ stellar performances:

Hayley White in Game #1, stopped over 50 shots and made some brilliant saves! She did a great job stepping up with the unfortunate absence of senior goalie Kristy Bruske. Hayley had some very big shoes to fill and she delivered.

Teresa Moriarty’s Game #2 offensive efforts resulted in a 2-goal game, igniting the Goannas’ scoring. Furthermore, her leadership qualities on and off the ice, in the absence of both Assistant Captains, certainly helped bring the team together over the weekend.

This was the Goannas best overall weekend both on and off the ice. It is exciting to finally have some lines come together.  We look forward to the return of star goalie Kristy Bruske and our Assistant Captains for Finals.
The Goannas are looking forward to the AWIHL Finals, February 26th & 27th, back in Melbourne. We hope to see a packed rink full of supporters.
