Playing for the Goannas.

Playing for the Goannas in the AWIHL is a unique experience that will take you across Australia to play in Brisbane, Sydney, Perth, Melbourne and Adelaide in a 12-game season plus finals. If playing a game of hockey in the morning and walking around the Opera House that afternoon sounds appealing to you, check out how you can join the team today!

From Australia

The AWIHL has representative teams from Victoria, South Australia, New South Wales and Queensland. Players are required to play for their home state unless they are released from their home state team coach. Release requirements differ with each team.

The Goannas home state is currently Queensland and home games are played in Brisbane. The Goannas team is comprised of players from all over Australia, including those from states which do not currently have a team in the AWIHL, regional Queensland players, as well as players from other states released from their home team.

If you are interested in attending the Goannas try-outs, held in August on the Gold Coast, contact us by filling out the form on this website.

From Overseas

Each AWIHL team is allowed 5 imports on their team roster and 3 imports to play in any one game. Imports are classified as those players who are living in Australia on a visa that is valid for less than two years. For more information on imports check out the IHA website.

The Goannas are currently recruiting import players. If you are interested in joining a team with a difference, check out our promotional flyer.

Are you from overseas but living in Australia for a visa 2 years or longer? We are very interested in talking to you about the possibility of travelling around Australia to play hockey this summer. Contact us now, or check out our promotional flyer.

If you have any further questions about playing for the Goannas or living in Australia, why not ask someone who has already done it? Check out our alumni page to view past player’s profiles and their contact details.

Financial Assistance

The cost to play in the AWIHL is quite high due to the lack of financial support and costs of travel. The Goannas participate in numerous fundraising activities year-round. We also arrange for sponsorship workshops and player sponsorship packages for those who are eager to approach businesses for support. Financial assistance or relief may be offered to players of a high-level who can contribute to the team’s success both on and off the ice. This possibility can be discussed with team staff.
